Exclusive: Meet The Artist Behind Iconic Liberty Prints. Exclusivo: Conoce La Artista Detrás de los Icónicos Estampados de Liberty

Exclusive for Chicas Guapas TV in London.

The energy and passion that Tessa radiates is not only contagious, but inspiring. Tessa Semple has been the Head of Textile Design of the iconic London store Liberty for the past two years, and is a graduate from Central Saint Martins who worked with Diane von Furstenberg in New York and other luxury brands for several years.

Organized by the store, and for a small group of people, I attended the presentation of the Autumn Winter collection 2016. Tessa, together with six members of the team she leads, traveled to Istanbul to investigate the culture and thus find inspiration in the bazaars, food, spices, architecture and strident colors, contrasting but at the same time complementing each other.

Tell us about the team dynamics during the design process.

-I know the strengths of each team member. Based on that, I delegate the various aspects that I want to focus on the season, either calligraphy or flowers, or geometry. Everyone collaborates in creating designs, teamwork is very important to me. Inspiration is always sought in places, books, landscapes, works of art. I still go to the library of the Central Saint Martins to complement the research.

How do you choose the color palette that will be used each season?

-That’s the hardest thing to decide. Everyone presents proposals and try to convince each other which one is the best! We all are very passionate about what we do … We try to choose something that is aligned with trends, but also include the factor of “imbalance”, that color that contrasts with the rest, that has nothing to do with anything … and that’s when the magic happens! That’s also the identity of Liberty: It is unique, different from the rest.

What is your advise for the ones who are afraid of prints?

-Do not come to Liberty! Liberty is all about prints, colors. Now seriously, my advice is to combine prints with solid colors, slowly, with accessories, until you feel more comfortable. For those who are more familiar with the prints, the “mismatching” is cool. We must dare to wear different prints together. The secret lies in the sizes, they have to be similar.

Liberty has done collaborations with Uniqlo, Nike, ACNE, APC, among others, and supplies many other brands in many market in the world, which requires a special research in each of them. The goal is to always keep the DNA of the brand, but with a current and modern feel. So that’s how magic is created around these prints, mostly florals, that have accompanied us all our lives, whether in children’s dresses, handkerchieves, pencil cases or stationary we used back in school.

-No vengas a Liberty!
