What Antonio Berardi Says About London as a Designer. Lo Que Antonio Berardi Dice Sobre Londres Como Diseñador.

Exclusive from the Victoria & Albert Museum: Chicas Guapas Tv and The Style Manager at the famous British designer Antonio Berardi’s talk in London.
Antonio Berardi was born in England to Italian parents. He described how them influenced him since childhood through details: his mother kept her handbags according to the occasion, by day, by night, and handkerchiefs in the same way. He was taught that for every occasion there was a special way to dress, codes that influenced him until today and translates through his designs.
He visited Sicily from a young age, which helped him absorb the Italian baroque details and femininity we see in his silhouettes, combined with corsets he learnt to create while working with Galliano in London.
Antonio Berardi finally graduated from Central Saint Martins in London after being rejected several times before he was accepted to study at the renowned university. He never gave up, he knew thats’ where he had to study. Meanwhile he was working with John Galliano and on the evenings he’d focus on creating his portfolio until his application finally got accepted on the third try. The rest is history.
Who is your muse?.
-The women around me. They inspire me, I see their facets, they have evolved, changed against other eras. Today Gigi and Kendall (for Hadid and Jenner) are references, but I never limit myself. Women are all special and different. I feel that with my designs I help them express themselves.
How do you find the balance between commercial needs and designer creativity?.
-My team guides me in what I create so people buy it, they keep me grounded if they think there is something that doesn’t work in my designs.
Why do you live in Milan and not in London?.
-Milan is a beautiful and comfortable place to live in, I have all my team there, though I miss how international and cosmopolitan London is. London is cool and daring, you can be riskier as a designer in this city, it is more difficult to express freely elsewhere. It is ideal for young designers. In this city the sky is the limit, everything is possible.
What piece of advice would you give to someone who dreams to immerse in this industry?.
-Have the b**** to do it and make that dream happen.
